Rug Care Guide

A little regular care keeps your rug looking good for longer. These are general tips for most rugs. Always check the care label on your rug first and follow it if it says something different.

When your rug arrives

  • Rugs travel rolled, so they can have creases or curled edges at first. Unroll your rug and let it lie flat for a few days; the creases usually drop out on their own.
  • To speed things up, you can roll the rug the other way (pile facing out) for a few hours, or put something heavy on any curled corners.
  • Never iron a rug.

Vacuuming

  • Vacuum once or twice a week, and more often in busy areas, to lift grit before it wears the pile.
  • Use a suction-only setting or a hand attachment. Turn off the rotating brush or beater bar, especially on shaggy, deep-pile and 3D-carved rugs, as it can pull and fluff the fibres.
  • Vacuum in the direction of the pile, and avoid sucking up fringes or tassels.
  • Now and then, vacuum the back of the rug and the floor underneath.

Shedding

New shaggy and deep-pile rugs release some loose fibres at first. This is normal, not a fault, and it settles with regular vacuuming. Don't pull out any loose tufts; trim them level with the pile using scissors instead.

Spills and stains

  • Act quickly. Blot (don't rub) with a clean, white, dry cloth, working from the outside of the spill inwards.
  • Scrape off anything solid with a blunt knife or spoon. Let mud dry first, then brush and vacuum it away.
  • If a mark remains, dab with a little cold water and a small amount of mild detergent, then blot with a dry cloth. Test on a hidden corner first.
  • Use as little water as possible, and never soak the rug. Let it dry fully, away from direct heat.
  • Avoid bleach and strong household cleaners.

Rotate your rug

Turn your rug round every 3–6 months so it wears and fades evenly, especially in busy areas or near a window.

Sunlight

Strong, direct sunlight can fade colours over time. Close blinds or curtains at the brightest times of day and rotate your rug regularly.

Flattened pile

Furniture can leave dents. Move furniture slightly from time to time. To lift a dent, brush the pile gently with your fingers or a soft brush.

Underlay

A good rug underlay adds cushioning, helps the rug stay in place and reduces wear. Choose one a little smaller than your rug so it doesn't show at the edges.

Deep cleaning

For a deep clean or a stubborn stain, use a professional rug cleaner. Many recommend a professional clean every 12–18 months, depending on how busy the room is.
