Description

Lilac and grey drift like clouds across this multicolour vintage oriental rug, giving a bedroom or dressing room a dreamy, faded calm. Lavender leans hardest into the overdyed look, with a mottled field where colour pools and fades unevenly, much as it does on an older rug that has been re-dyed. Its low pile and softly worn-in appearance make it easy to live with day to day.

The field is patchy and cloud-like rather than strictly patterned, with lilac and grey blending through the striated abrash. It loves chalky white, pale mauve or warm stone walls, a linen headboard, whitewashed or honey oak, and pewter or aged silver. The 160 x 230 cm size sits beneath a double bed, 150 x 200 cm suits a dressing area, and the 60 x 240 cm runner softens a hallway.

Care

Vacuum regularly on a low setting; blot spills straight away and spot clean with mild detergent; professional clean when needed.

Tip: use an anti-slip underlay on hard floors. It keeps the rug flat and makes vacuuming easier.

Good to know

Samarkand questions

Are Samarkand rugs old rugs that have been overdyed?

No. Samarkand rugs are new rugs designed to capture the look of vintage overdyed pieces, with slate-grey grounds, striated abrash and softly faded Persian-style and oriental-style patterns. You get the character of an older rug with the choice of practical, modern sizes, including a 60 x 240 cm runner.

What size Samarkand rug do I need for my living room?

For most living rooms, 160 x 230 cm sits comfortably under the front legs of a sofa and armchairs, while 200 x 290 cm anchors a larger seating area or open-plan space. In smaller rooms, 150 x 200 cm or 120 x 170 cm works well in front of a two-seater sofa.

How do I look after a low-pile rug like this, and will it shed?

Vacuum regularly and rotate the rug every few months so it wears evenly. Blot spills straight away with a clean, damp cloth rather than rubbing, and use a professional rug cleaner for anything deeper. Like most new rugs, it may release a few loose fibres at first; this settles with regular vacuuming.

Do I need a rug underlay, and can I use it over underfloor heating?

On hard floors we recommend a good-quality rug underlay to help keep the rug in place and add a little cushioning underfoot. We don't publish an underfloor heating rating for this range, so please check your heating system's guidance on floor coverings before laying any rug over it.

Is delivery free, and can I return my rug?

Yes. Every Samarkand rug comes with free UK mainland delivery, and if the colours or size don't work in your room, you have 14 days to return it with postage paid. It's worth looking at the rug in both daylight and lamplight before deciding.
